What we found

Cedar shingles and painted trim are two different maintenance problems on the same wall. The shingles sit under an eave for much of their height and take less direct rain; the fascia, brackets and frames stand fully out in the sun and weather, and they are what starts to look tired first.

How this kind of work is done

Mayda grades the coating by exposure rather than paying top price everywhere. Walls take a mid-to-high grade product chosen for UV and sun resistance with a degree of water resistance; the trim takes the best coating available, because fascia, frames and doors are the parts that are fully exposed and the extra grade buys real years there. Everything is pressure washed first, and on this coast the finish holds its appearance for three to five years before it is worth going round again.
