Why to test paint colours in your own space

Reference photographs and screen swatches are useful for finding a direction. Physical samples are more useful for confirming it. Consider light, adjacent materials, the intended location and the planned sheen together.

Step 01

Narrow the choices to a workable comparison

Create a small shortlist and identify flooring, furniture or exterior elements you plan to keep. Choose a sample method appropriate to the supplier and actual product. A small screen capture should not be the final colour approval.

Observe it in the real location

Place the sample beside the relevant surface or material. Compare daylight, evening lighting and normal viewing positions. Corners, window areas and the deeper parts of a room may create different impressions, so avoid deciding from just one moment.

Step 03

Compare neighbouring colours and sheen

Walls, ceilings, trim and cabinets may use different products or finishes. Look at the group and decide whether you want continuity or contrast. Photographs can record the discussion, but screen settings, white balance and lighting affect their appearance. Use suitable physical samples as the reference.

Step 04

Record the final decision

Keep the brand, product, colour, sheen, surface and approval date. Retain sample notes for special effects or matched colours. Confirm colour choices alongside the work scope to reduce ambiguity later.
