Fence Painting and Staining
Mayda Painting provides fence painting and staining. Material, existing finish, board condition and access help define the work. The two faces, posts, rails and gates may each have a different scope.
Planning the scope
Tell us the approximate length and height, which sides need treatment and whether neighbouring-side access is available. Provide overall photos and close-ups of worn or damaged areas. Agree on access and the included components before comparing estimates.
How we plan the work
- Assess the surface. Discuss the material, existing condition, access and the areas involved.
- Agree the preparation and treatment. Put protection, cleaning or repairs, the selected finish and responsibilities into the scope.
- Carry out and review the agreed work. Confirm suitable conditions, check the scope together and discuss the actual product’s drying and return-to-use requirements.
Does a fence estimate include both sides?
Do not assume so. Specify faces, posts, gates and edges, and confirm which areas can actually be reached during the work.
How Mayda does this
A fence that has never been coated and a fence being redone are two different jobs, and they take different products.
Bare wood takes solid stain. On a fence that has never been painted or stained, solid stain goes on rather than paint — as on the Richmond fence in our gallery, sprayed in two coats.
Wash first, then wait. Pressure washing removes the moss and the grey weathered layer. The wood then needs about five or six days to dry right through before anything is applied. Not waiting is the most common reason a fence coating fails early.
Book it into a dry stretch. Fence work is planned around a run of clear days, not a single one.
The wash is also the inspection. Once the fence is clean the real condition shows. If only a few boards have gone, we replace those and coat the rest. If it is failing throughout, coating it is not worth the money and we will say so.
Kept up, the timber does not rot. On a fence that gets recoated, it is the coating that ages, not the wood. Recoating costs far less than replacing a fence.
Solid stain does not last as long as paint, but it is what fences are normally done in.
