Prepare your home for a painting project

The most useful preparation is knowing what will move, what needs protection and what must stay usable. Agree on responsibilities with the painting team before arranging furniture and daily routines.

Mark three types of area

Identify the work zone, temporary storage and routes that must remain open. Explain which rooms are needed in the evening, which doors cannot remain closed, and arrangements for household members or pets. Even a one-room project needs a clear moving route.

Organise personal belongings

Move photographs, fragile decorations, small electronics and important documents to an agreed safe location. Confirm who moves and reinstalls large furniture, curtains, fixtures or appliances. Do not remove unfamiliar fixed equipment yourself merely to prepare for painting.

Discuss protection and existing conditions

Photograph existing damage, marks or loose items. Identify furniture and flooring that need particular attention. Include protective materials, masking boundaries, cleaning and waste responsibilities in the discussion rather than relying on a broad assumption that everything is covered.

Plan the return to normal use

Finishing the application is not necessarily the same as a surface being ready for washing, adhesive items or abrasion. Ask for instructions for the products actually used, then coordinate furniture placement, hanging pictures and room use. If the work is part of a move, allow room for these arrangements in the schedule.
