How to compare painting estimates

Put painting proposals into the same scope checklist before comparing their totals. Similar floor areas do not necessarily mean the same preparation, materials or site arrangements.

First, identify the surfaces

List walls, ceilings, doors, frames, baseboards, trim and other items separately. For an exterior, note each elevation and the areas to retain. If one proposal includes ceilings and another covers walls only, ask for that difference to be made explicit before comparing prices.

Next, examine preparation and supporting work

Record how repairs, cleaning, masking, priming and existing-coating treatment are defined. Check responsibility for moving furniture or equipment, clearing personal belongings, access and cleanup. A specific list is more useful than an unexplained promise of complete preparation.

Then check products and changes

Confirm the proposed product, sheen and colour scope. Identify surfaces that need a further assessment. Ask how extra repairs, changed colours or new site conditions will affect the scope. Do not assume one total covers every possible change.

Finish with your own use requirements

At home, consider the rooms and living arrangements. For a business, consider occupied areas, routes and coordination responsibilities. Gather unresolved points into a short list for the next conversation.
